Why Do Car Mechanics Suggest for Extra Parts. Check out

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

It is very common that you go for car servicing at dealer workshop with minor running repairs but you get a bill with some parts changed without your knowledge. Most of the car owner has similar complaints.

Car Mechanic

Dealer workshops have many targets to meet. Targets of spare parts orders in a month. So, service managers get incentives to meet that target. It is obvious they would try to sell same parts to every car owner even if that is not required. Incentives to service manager leads to mal practices at workshops.
To avoid these problem, here are few things you can keep in mind.

1. Car Check up
Always go for car check up first and get assessment with estimated cost. It is in the report that which parts runs how much time. For example, service manager would say your break pad needs to be changed. There are chances that present condition of break pads may not worse but they recommend it do it now. Ask them few questions. You are the better judge!

2. Estimated Cost
All good car workshops offer estimated cost during car check up. Ask for labour charges, that makes difference as it varies from workshop to workshop. For your knowledge, dealer and independent workshop labour cost has 25 % to 50% labour cost difference.

3. Test Drive
Every good car workshop offer test drive after servicing. You must ask for test drive. If you find any problem during test drive, you can point out.

4. Extra Parts
Always go for genuine spare parts. Maruti offers genuine spare parts are Maruti Authorized Service Station and have strict guidelines to their service station of not using any spurious spares. Other brand Authorized service stations also have genuine spare parts, but ask to car workshop to show you spare parts they are using.

Next time your car mechanic suggests you replacement of new parts, you must have assessment ready if that is required or not. There is no formula to know but when you get assessment from 2 car workshops, then you may have fair idea.

Car service centers should recycle old car batteries : Survey

Friday, October 21st, 2011

A recent survey in USA revealed that 80 percent of old batteries are left at car service center. The majority of people suggested that recycling of car batteries is higher priority than e-waste and car service center should recycle old batteries.

Surprisingly, old car batteries are exported to developing nations with weaker environmental and occupational health standards. SLAB Watchdog is an organization committed to promoting the safe and domestic recycling of spent lead acid batteries (SLABs) instead of exporting them to developing nations.

“When 93 percent of the population states batteries purchased by federal, state and local governments should be recycled domestically, we believe government should listen,” said SLAB Watchdog Director Diane Cullo.

The modern car battery is a lead-acid battery design. It is an electrochecmical device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. When the battery is placed under a load, such as when the ignition is switched on, the device converts stored chemicals into electricity, and the current flows through the wires to its destination.

Safety Precautions

• Always wear goggles or a face shield.
• Use a lead-lined or nonmetallic container to hold electrolyte.
• Always pour acid slowly into water, not water into acid.
• Stir as you add small amounts of acid.
• Never lean over a battery when charging, testing, or jump-starting an engine.
• Always disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last.
• Charge batteries only in well-ventilated areas.
• Never charge or jump-start a frozen battery; let it warm to at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Race for making fuel efficient small cars – Hyundai EON, Maruti Alto

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

With increase in petrol prices, car buyers look for fuel efficient cars. Now automotive companies are adopting new technologies along with reducing weight of cars and improvement in powertrain to make fuel afficient cars.

Today, Hyundai has launched new small car Eon. It has mileage of 21.1 Kmpl and same power as Maruti Alto (814 CC). Maruti Alto has a fuel efficiency of 20.2 kmpl. Tata Nano is powered by a 600 cc engine, lightweight with mileage of 23.7 kmpl.

Eon takes over from the Alto K10 as the most fuel-economical entry-level car in the country besides the Nano. Major reason for Maruti Alto for becoming largest selling car is its frugal drinking habit.

Maruti is the only car manufacturer which has a large network of 2992 Maruti Authorized Service Station in 1406 cities across India. This is one of major reason car buyer prefer Maruti cars. Last year when Tata Nano improved their sales by changing focus to small cities by improving convenient car service options. After sales service impacts the sales of the vehicle.

To increase after sales service, Hyundai is also opening more Hyundai Authorized Service Stations. Earlier Hyundai dealers were the only option for car servicing.

Multibrand workshops are new trend in the aftermarket industry and there are 19000 workshops in the country. Every corporate look for these multibrand and independent car workshops to make them authorized service station. With increase in cars, multibrand business is becoming more profitable than doing servicing for one make, so workshop owner prefer multibrand servicing. Mobil1 and Bosch Car Service are making authorized service centers by providing them their products and support services.

Costly car repair Cheap car bumpers

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Car bumper is the front and rear-most part designed to allow the car to sustain an impact without damage to the car’s safety systems. They are not helpful in high-speed impacts but prevent damage in low-speed collisions.

According to recent insurance company survey , replacement of car bumpers have increased the cost of repair. Most of the cars do not have good bumpers. Surprisingly, there was only one vehicle 1981 Ford Escort passed the test for best bumber during testing and survey.

“Automakers could equip new cars with bumpers that are every bit as good as the 1981 Ford Escort’s, but they choose not to,” commented by president of agency which conducted tests.

All parts don’t cost the same. The total cost to fix damage after a minor bump is influenced by more than the extent of the damage. Another issue is that the price of the same part a fender, hood, or other part varies from vehicle to vehicle.

Besides the cost of damage in low-speed collisions, there’s the aggravation. Most people want to avoid having to get repair estimates, arrange for repairs, and then do without their cars while they’re in the auto shop.

Reducing the damage required the bumpers to engage the barrier and absorb the energy of the impact, but this mostly didn’t happen.

Good bumper performance requires not only engagement with the test barrier but also strength sufficient to absorb the energy of a low-speed crash.
